2026 Program Dates

NEW for 2026 Program:

For the 2026 program, the entire 6 weeks include mandatory, in-person sessions, so you will need to be in San Francisco and be able to travel to our program sites (mainly UCSF Helen Diller Medical Center at Parnassus Heights, UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay, and Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital). We have increased our stipend to $4000 for 2026.

Eligibility

Please note that program participation is a full-time commitment. In addition, you are required to be present in-person in San Francisco during the posted program dates. Applicants must be able to attend 90% of program sessions AND all mandatory sessions to be eligible for selection. Applicants are expected to confirm with their home institutions that they will be able to commit to the posted program dates prior to applying. For reference, mandatory sessions will run Monday through Friday from 0900 to 1300 (9 a.m. to 2 p.m.) Pacific Standard Time. (Planned social gatherings or other program events may be scheduled outside of these hours; these are infrequent and not considered mandatory.)

Please disclose in your application if you are already participating in another funded summer mentorship or research program. Preference will be given to students NOT participating in another funded summer research opportunity.

Program Benefits

Benefits of participating in the UCSF Student Leadership Program in Social EM and Health Equity include:

Individualized mentorship and networking with UCSF Emergency Medicine faculty, residents, and co-fellows
Clinical skills and procedure labs (ultrasound, splinting, suturing, etc)
Hands-on clinical experience at UCSF Helen Diller Medical Center and Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center
Step-by-step guidance to develop and present a scholarly project
Opportunity to learn about and improve equitable care of historically underserved communities

A $4,000 stipend will be provided to all students for housing, travel/transportation, meeting registration, meeting travel, and research resources. Funding will be awarded to students who have not received other funding for the same project; applicants should immediately disclose receipt of additional research funding. Funding must be used between May 1, 2026 and Sept. 30, 2026. Additional funding for reimbursement of research supplies (i.e., statistical software, etc.) may be available on a case-by-case basis. Parking is no longer considered a reimbursable expense.

*Note for UCSF Students ONLY: UCSF medical students are accepted for our program will be expected to apply for funding through the UCSF Summer Explore Research Fellowship Program. We provide on-demand assistance (for obtaining a research mentor/project for Summer Explore submission) to students accepted to our program.

Fellow Responsibilities

All fellows are expected to:

Verify with their home institutions that you will be able to commit to the posted program dates
Be able to be present in-person (in San Francisco) for the posted in-person dates
Submit a signed commitment to completing the fellowship if selected, promptly notify coordinators of any changes or concerns
Disclose in your application if you are already participating in another funded summer mentorship or research program
Exhibit professional behavior (show up on time, participate actively, etc.) consistent with UCSF's PRIDE Values
Attend 90% of program sessions AND all mandatory sessions

Deliverables

Fellows will complete the following deliverables during their time in the program:

Pre-work and assignments related to lectures, clinical skills, and procedurelabs
Weekly to bimonthly meetings with research and career mentors
Clinical Skills Presentation
Scholarly Work Project Presentation at one Work in Progress (WIP) session and at the final symposium
Feedback surveys

*You are not expected to complete your project in six weeks; however, you are certainly welcome to take on a smaller portion of a project if you would like to limit this work to the summer.
